The sun rises in the east and travels along a southern sky and then sets in the west. So the north side gets the least light and the south side gets the most. That's why people have more windows on the south side and why moss grows on the north side of trees

If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, the sun transits the sky South of you, so obviously, the South side of the house gets the sun. Other factors may apply, as in tree coverage, heigth of surrounding terrain. Most homes are not set "square on the compass", meaning you don't have the home oriented exactly so one side of the house is perfectly aligned with the travel of the sun. you also have to take into account the season and the axis of the Earth's tilt. But the bottom line......South side. Artists tend to want homes with a large expanse of windows toward the North because that Northern light is more neutral and natural for artwork.

You know something, I used to go by the sun's direction, time of the year, and all that stuff, truth be told, I just watched the sun one day, each hour made a note as to where it was. The placement of the house, any fencing, trees, etc can all affect what parts get how much sun. GL
