Oh, of course he was. We have a supposedly Christian country which has an ammoral foreign policy that would have supported Hitler as long as he opposed someone we didn't like. That's why we have nobody to blame but ourselves for the mess that is the world right now. We work with China (brutal dictatorship) but blockade Cuba (tiny Island that has never done anything)- even though we say (Russia) that keeping open talks is the way to go.

And now we oppose Iran - as if their hate for us came from thin air - not that we supporte the Shah who was brutal, and the oil companies that exploited the country. Granted, Iran is an uncivilized theocracy that also supports proxy wars (Hizbullah and others)- but we invade Iraq and give them even more material for how we are the crusading Christian West- otherwise, why didn't we get world support for the Iraq war?

Ally? That's an inaccurate portrayal of the relationship.

We supported his efforts against Iran. When he was looking for help, we agreed to back him with the World Bank so he could purchase more weapons and munitions, etc. We did this mainly to prevent an Iranian victory, which might then hold sway over all of Arabia and the oil production therein.

But 'ally'? That's far too strong a word - it implies a much closer tie than there was.

What's your point? We were only allies insofar as we had a common enemy. When we could no longer benefit from that type of alliance, or could benefit otherwise, we "dumped" him. We always screw with politics -- especially near the Middle East.

Of course not, we were allies. Just as we were allies with another totalitarian dictator, Joseph Stalin. Was that a mistake, too?

Of course he was! We gave him weapons and Rumsfeld even shook hands with him as allies.
