execution is the most important thing. keep working hard and executing, dont be a dumbo and sit in the back and socialize and smoke cigarettes.
also, if youve got it, flaunt it. and flirt.

Take some "tips" from Chick-fil-la founder, Truett Cathy and offer exceptionally good service with a smile. As difficult as it is to deal with some customers, act like you truly care if their meal is to their liking. After leaving their meal, return in a few minutes to refill their drinks and ask, "How is your meal?" "Can I bring you anything else?" When you bring the check, smile and tell them to come again.
Remember this...some people are genuine @ss holes and are going to complain no matter how much you kiss their butts! These people didn't plan on tipping from the beginning and are the rude people who shoo you away when you attempt to take their order because they are talking on the cell phone and then b***h and complain when you are not wating at their elbow when they finish their conversation. Despite the fact that they are rude, know that they were going to stiff you from the git go!
The number one thing that really causes me to be dissatified with the service is the server bringing the meal to the table and then pulling a dissapearing act until he/she brings the check to the table.
Even when the food is bad, I still tip the server, knowing that the food preparation is not his/her fault. I'd rather mention poor quality food to the mgr. and add that the service was good. When the service is bad, I still tip the server, but I inform the mgr. of this as well.
In my personal opinion, the restraurant that has the worst servers in the Metro Atlanta area is The Olive Garden. I've tried many in the metro area, but the one thing they all have in common is bad customer service and they all seem to practice the "dissapearing" act! They are also selfish with the olives, acting as if the cost of each individual olive comes directly out of their paycheck!

Don't ever be rude to a customer. You cannot act like you are doing them a favor by serving them. If you're having a bad day, you cannot let them know it. Customers go to restaurants to relax and enjoy, not to be stressed out or irritated. Your number one weapon is your smile and your manners. Don't forget to use the manners you mamma taught you when you were little. If they apologize for asking for something, tell them it's not a problem and that's what you are there for.
Speed of service is also a biggie. Even if it's "not your fault" that the food came out wrong or quickly enough, don't blame it on others. Simply apologize and ask nicely if there is anything else you can do for them. And if at all possible, when customers are seated, don't leave them sit there without water and menus for too long. That's just starting out on a bad foot.
I have been a waitress so I understand the need for the approiate tip (20%). With me, you start with 20% and work your way down. If you are rude to me or act like you don't care if I'm there or not, it starts going down fast.

you should be friendly, have very good knowledge of the menu and your products that are served there. You should look good, and smile at your guests. Always get the order right and refill drinks. On thing that will cut down on a tip is a glass getting empty. Make sure that they have everything that they need, and pay attention to them, but don't over do it.. just think if what you want when you go to a restaurant and give them the service you would want if it was you.

15 to 20% i would think good for tip and the main cause for a bad tip is how the servers treated the guests

In my opinion the main cause for a bad tip is is the customer feels neglected. Sitting with an empty glass, you said you were coming right back with sour cream and it took ten minutes things like that. Also, it sounds like crap, but you have to adapt to the people you are serving. Some people want someone to bring them their food and drinks with as little talking as possible. Others want to talk and have a good time with you. You just have to kinda guage your clientelle.

Never leave the guest wanting, make sure they have everything they need, before they ask for it.
That will benefit you also, it saves time & steps.
Always be nice, if there is a couple dote on the woman, if she is happy, the tip will be bigger.
Tip rule 15% for good service & 20% for exceptional service.
Hope this helps.

Good advice: Don't take forever to get things for your table (i.e. refills on drinks, the check, dessert, etc.) I can't stand asking for the check and having to wait more than a few minutes for it. Same goes for asking for an iced tea refill.

Be kind and courteous.. Not overly, so that it seems fake. Greet with a smile and warm welcome... Pay attention to details (try to not let their glasses completely empty; make sure they get condiments as necessary: steak sauce, parmesan cheese for spaghetti, mustard, ketchup, mayonaise, tartar sauce, butter, etc.; ask if they need a high chair if they have small children and if they want children's cups)... Make sure you reread their order to them, to be sure it is exact. Be sure to take dirty dishes away and not have them sitting there... Ask if they would like desserts... Just don't be rude... Try not to drop or spill anything. Smile.. Best wishes!

I agree with all said here so far.
But what about the cheap@$$es? And the rude @$$holes? And the gaggle of harpies from the office down the street? There are some people you just can't please...
