1. First of all get the software latest version will be good 1.5 i think .
2. then get a couple of Java books , E-books. like java unleashed, java 1.5, core java. which is easy to understand for you . 3. then install the software and try the example programs .
4. when you get well with this combine different code and write on your own .
5. never forget to keep on finding and using new things. This is how i learnt Java .
6.always see other proficient guys source codes and try to understand and adapt .

I recommend "Core java" book. It tells you the exact steps of how to use java and how to download software required to run java programs. Also the tutorial, which is downloaded with the SDK from sun.com is very helpful and includes a lot of examples. I recommend also downloading the documentation from the same site. Those three resources will be more than enough in my opinion.

HI am too a B.TECH STUDENT..as you said that you not good at progarmming....so why don't you go for VB.NET instead of JAVA???..COZ IT HAS LESS CODING AND IT IS SAID THAT .NET IS ALMOST EQUIVALENT TO JAVA......
AND about you learning JAVA at home......not a very good idea...
its tuff..you would need help of a teacher...
and as you a b.tech STUDENT not told which branch....but if you are an c.s.e or I.T student then you can learn these in training period...the 2month training...and then the 6month training.....coz then it is mandatory for you to undergo training from an institution or an industry......
AM a ELECTRONIC&COMMUNICATION student from P.T.U...
i did a course on VB.NET in my 2months training....AND IN THE 6MONTH training period will learn JAVA and advance JAVA as an extra course alongwith with the electronics training according to requirement of my course......
