In 1948 George Orwell wrote a futuristic book and transposed the last 2 numbers to 1984. If he had written it a year later and named it 1994 we would have had Big Brother watching us and Newspeak in the form of Political Correctness.

There is a very delicate balance that must be struck to ensure a population's freedom and yet its safety. You should see the movie "V for Vendetta." It is an interesting commentary on this very point. Of course, that version of Britain is very far from where it is now.

BTW, I know how you feel Paladin. Why not encourage people to get out and vote in 2008?! We still have an elected government. If we can convince people to vote for the right candidates, the ones who believe in the Constitution and the America we all know this country can be, there is still the chance for change!

And Falco, what's up with the cynicism? That doesn't help anything. Why not stop complaining and start doing! Start writing articles to the newspaper about what the country should be. It doesn't help to gripe about the present unless you have suggestions for changing things for the better. You don't expect the government to figure out everything for itself, do you? Get some good suggestions and get out there!

It is happening everywhere in what they used to call "the free world". Our freedoms are taken away so incrementally, so deviously that we hardly notice. I live in the slave-state called the U.S. and our great Constitution has been overthrown by the Gov't with nary a peep. I read how there are video cams on every corner in london, appearing more and more in the States. The Federal Reserve and International Monetary Fund has enslaved the entire world with its worthless, debt-based fiat currency. When I see these brainwashed government robot citizens proudly proclaiming their love of 'freedom', I want to move to another planet!

Yes it can. Freedom dies in silence when the populace is dumbed-down and security is fed to people as the ultimate untouchable - the thing that justifies anything else. Armed police? Sure, because they 'improve security'. Biometric information on passports and cards? Sure - 'if you don't have anything to hide, why would you object?' Legislation to ensure people need police permission to hold a demonstration? Yeah, cos if your protest is 'legitimate' you won't be refused...

And so the majority smile as they're marched into silence.
