One of the troubles you will have is that motorcycles are like clothes - you have to pick one that fits you and feels comfortable. Honda and Harley both should have a few products to fit his tastes. I'll stick with the bikes they make for this answer, though there may be other things he might like.

First question: Does he currently have a motorcycle, or any recent motorcycle experience?

If not, check out Honda's Shadow VLX, Rebel (only if he's not too tall), or Nighthawk 250. The Nighthawk 250 is easy to learn on and fits taller riders, but I've got to warn you that the brakes are not good. Harley makes the Buell Blast, which falls into the kinda sporty but not a crotch rocket category and is meant especially for new riders, and the more traditional Sportster 883, which is a bit heavy for a beginner but an acceptable choice. There's also the Honda Big Ruckus, but that thing is definitely not for everyone.

And if he's a beginner, he will also benefit from some lessons and a complete set of gear. I wouldn't want to ride without either one. Of course, he may want to pick the latter out for himself.

If he's got a some good motorcycle riding under his belt, check out the Honda 599, 919, or maybe the larger Shadows. For Harleys, look at the V-Rod or Buell Lightning, or a Softail if he wants a more traditional look.

Harleys are GREAT bikes (built much better than they have been in the past), but they're very pricey. If he likes the cruiser-style bike, check out the Honda Shadow series. They look good, they're very reliable, and they cost less than a Harley. The size you should get depends on your husband's size and his level of riding experience. If he's a beginner, aim for a 450 or 500 unless he's a big/tall guy, in which case you should aim for a 600 or 650. If he's an experienced rider, don't get anything smaller than a 750, and you can go all the way up to a 1200 if he knows how to ride.

if he has never rode a bike before he should start out with an intermediate bike.or if available take the road coarse.the Suzuki savage Honda vlx ,harley sportster..if ther is some skill susuki boulevard m or c 50 ,yamaha v star honda vtx and your harley soft tail standard. the main thing on a bike is safety.and for you i tink you should be riding onyour own bike and the rush and feel is even greater.

I LOVE Harleys. I'm going to buy one for myself as soon as my divorce is final. It needs to fit his body (make sure his feet are planted on the ground when he's sitting on the bike) and his usage needs - just for running around, taking big trips? Are you going to ride with him? I have googled "how to buy a motorcycle" and there's lots of info. I have ridden as a passenger on lots of Harleys and on a couple of Hondas and Yamahas. There is nothing like a Harley. Good luck. I'm jealous.

I feel that Honda's are better bike, Harleys are over rated. I love the Honda VTX!!! I ride a sport bike, but I had to buy a cruiser that would be it.
