I am taking it with me to college so there can't be any other computers that it has to be hooked up to. I hope this question is clear enough to understand. I am confused by all these different kinds of internet that there are out there.

your set to go,also you can still use the internet if your school has a router or a student has a working router near by. Also just to be safe make sure its a b/g wireless card. That is what most routers use today. Although most of them use Wireless-G not Wireless-B

Before wireless-G there was:
Wireless-A
Wireless-B
they are starting to discontinue these because they have low transfer speeds and low ammout of security. If you have a modern wireless card it is most likely a Wirelss b/g card.

More that likely your college will have a LAN connection in your dorm room. The laptop has three types of internet hookups in it, it has a wireless for Wi-Fi and wireless networks, a 56K modem phone hookup, and a Ethernet port. The Ethernet port is the one you will plug into at the dorm. It is the port that is slightly larger and narrower than the phone jack port. They may also use Wi-Fi, as long as you keep the wireless card powered up, the computer will let you know if it is receiving a signal wirelessly. You will be hooked into the college's computer system. The only setup that I foresee is to set up the homepage in IE to the college's homepage. They probably have secure areas in their website, so you'll need a password from the college to access those areas. Seeing that you also have a router, you could set up your own network in your dorm room. Plug the ethernet cable (usually blue) into the router. Setup the router's software in your laptop and assign each a 128-bit WEP code. Presto, a secure wireless network in your dorm room.

As long as you have a wireless card and router, you're all set. Your college should have wi-fi or LAN just like the others have said. If it does, all you have to do is double-click Internet Explorer and it should connect.

Once online, go to Download.com and read reviews on security software. You can download some excellent ones for FREE such as a firewall (ZoneAlarm), anti-spyware (Ad-Aware), and registry cleaners (CCleaner). Download these programs first before you surf for your protection.

The Internet is the same all over. At my college, I just plug the laptop in and it works. However, your college could require a password to get onto their network.
