The world's first officially issued adhesive postage stamp was Great Britain's Penny Black, which was issued May 1, 1840 and became valid for prepayment of postage on May 6, 1840. Other countries soon saw how well it worked and started issuing their own stamps. The first US stamps were issued in 1847.

The Adhesive for the postage stamp was invented by James Chalmers 1782 - 1853 a Dundee book seller.

Chalmers suggested an adhesive postage stamp in 1834, inventing the lick and stick adhesive. [Which is used in all sorts of stationary items]

It was taken up Roland Hill in 1839 and used for the first time that year.
