I am trying to find out when movies are considered rare. It has boggled me because I see a lot of older movies considered to be rare but then I will also see some of the newer movies being considered rare as well. Any help will be appreciated.

A movie would be considered rare when it's out-of-print and can't be obtained through normal outlets.

Movies can go "out of print" just like books. If there were very few copies ever made it can be considered "rare". Also, very high demand movies that are pulled from print can become quit valuable. Disney Studios is a master at making sure their films keep a "rare" aura about them by only releasing the older titles every few years for a short time.

A rare movie is when the film steps away from current conventions and practises and deviates from what distributing companies would like to sell.

They are rare because it is hard for them to get funding and distribution. They are rare because the step outside the contrived box set of rules that hollywood cinema emulates.

And finally they are rare because they have passed through these hurdles and share insights and make statements about life society, relationships, religion or politics and it is fresh. It is honest and without the constraints of the system that stops it from getting to this stage.

It is rare to see a film get to here. what is even more rare is for audiences to see the film and engage with it. but if they do then that rare film has achieved what it set out to do.

When there actually entertaining.

It's hard to find a good movie now a days that doesn't have a swear word after every other word. It makes the movie lack intelligence. I don't mind one or two to express a characters state.

It's a supply thing. If there aren't many prints, it is a rare movie.

If you can't buy them in stores, they're rare. I have this problem with Peter Pan on DVD. It's really expensive to buy legitimate with the case.
