Blogs are an effective tool to stay updated on a friend's life. They're also a tool for self-exploration.
There is more one than one website that hosts blogs, so someone must be reading them. I don't find it narcissistic and the premise of personal websites isn't odd either.

I have one started. Mine is for family only. I do this in order to keep those in our family, that are miles away, up to date and close commuting with one another. We find it a very useful and productive tool. Many people invite friends and make friends through their web pages. And... it can also turn into a fun hobby.

People need to feel that their word counts to someone. They want to share their lives and give to others in the process too.
It is something that people like yourself will never understand because they are genuine friends to selfish people out there.

Maybe they're doing it for their friends and family. Maybe it's a way to keep them updated on their life. Why not do it?
