The siren is among other things, a symbol of the many faceted woman. Take the Argonautic tales for example. There are sirens (irresistable, dangerous), Amazons, (warrior women), Medea (an intellegigent sorceress who snares the hero, Jason)
Women play many roles in myth and the reason for the sirens many appearances lies with the male writers of these tales. Irresistable, dangerous, mysterious is how man sees woman. The appearance of these creatures tells a whole lot more of man's perception of woman than the creature itself.
