Well, I've been given the news yesterday that I'll have to have a tonsillectomy. Though I'm scared shitless (excuse the French), it's something that I know I NEED, and hopefully will cut back on the times that I've gotten strep throat (4 times since January.)

I've been told that the surgery is totally different for children as it is for older teens and adults. I'm 22, so I guess I fall into the category of the surgery being more stressful and complicated.

So, I'm looking for advice from other people that have had the surgery as an "older teen" or an adult, and to let me know what I can expect. How long were you out for? Anything that helped ease the pain more? What in the heck did you do for the amount of days you were out? When did you start feeling better? HOW MUCH DID IT COST?!? lol Any advice or little tid-bits will help.

THANKS!!!!!!

It will be OK. Have some Popsicles in the freezer because you won't want to go out to get them later. Drink cold water and avoid eating hard or spicy foods. Do what the Dr. says and don't talk to much at first cause it hurts to do so. While you are recuperating write letters, watch TV, get on the computer, read, quiet things you love to do. Good Luck

I had my tonsils out when I was about 18. It can be difficult. One thing you need to do is POSITIVELY follow the doctors orders to a T afterwards. I was told to eat cups of pieces of ice. The pieces strip the throat of blood clots, etc and you heal quicker. I was lazy and just waited till the ice melted and drank the cold water. Not the way to go. My sister had hers out the same day and she ate the ice cubes and she healed right away. Also, they may ask you to buy a certain gargle. Don't subsidize and buy some generic cheaper version. Buy the good stuff. If you take the post operation directions serious, you will have mimimal recovery.

I had surgery but for something different as a 17yr old, now im 20. It was very frightening for me because it was to save my life. I'd seen tv shows where a character is going to have surgery (saved by the bell, fresh prince of bel aire) and they bolted from the hospital. I wanted to do that but I realized it was important. If you really need the surgery then get it. It will help you in the long run. I was put on anethesia and that stuff knocked me out. I came too after the surgery and the room was spinning. I was in and out in a day, but it was on the side of my stomach so if I coughed, moved, etc, I was in pain. I was put on pain pills and a week later I could move without pain. The thing that helped me ease the pain was faith in God. I prayed and prayed and sat by myself and night in my bedroom looking out. My friends weren't there to support me and my boyfriend at the time didn't care about it. Just pray to God, maybe meet with a pastor of a church to pray for you. i hope that you stay strong. It's hard to not worry but keeping a positive attitude helps ALOT, take it from me a negative thinker. Oh and about the cost it was in the thousands. I payed for it by Medicaid. If your in financial need, contact medicaid, or another service from your local hospital that can refer you.

Its nothing to be afraid of, you are completely under anesthetics, they remove them with the same technique as they do children. Its just that adults have more of worring tendencies then children, children really don't know what surgery is. Just make sure to drink alot of fluids, try to avoid caffiene. Sucking on a popsickle or ice will have the same effects on your throat, as someone who has a swollen joint, it will cut down the swelling and help numb the pain. Good Luck!

Well, I had my tonsils out twice and all I remember is that my throat was awfully sore, but, I was only 12 when I got them out the second time. My daughter was very sick about the same age missing her last 3 months of school. She got hers out that summer and I tell you, she was very sore too. I can't imagine how an adult could have a much sorer throat. I just think they have a longer healing period.

A relative had hers taken out about 22. She was home that day but was told to spend the next two weeks recovering at home. That means stay home and rest.

Sleep is the best advise. Soft foods because your throat will be sore.

I had mine out at 25. I couldn't swallow the pain med, childrens Tylenol, so the Dr. gave me Tylenol Suppositories. Believe me that helped. Also they warn not to drink or eat red juice or jello. I lived on extremely cold Hawaiian Punch for 2 weeks and some Spaghetti O's. My cousin who's 40 just had them out on a Tuesday, was at a family function on Saturday. Couldn't talk much but felt okay to go to party-brought his own jello!!! Good Luck!!!
