I have seen many "generic" brands on ebay for intake systems. I heard the only difference from name brands is the heat shielded coating. Is there any problems with generic brands from ebay for intake systems. I could jus purchase one for $60 and repaint with engine enamel.

That's more or less what they are. There are five things though that can distinguish a bad intake from a good one.

1. Where they put the filter. Does it get cold air? Could it suck up a puddle if you're driving in the rain?

2. Amount of heat resistance. Some will let the air inside absorb more engine heat.

3. Volume. In some cases, carefully selecting the right volume can create a wave effect that gives you a little bit more power. Seems only a few high intakes end tune for this; AEM is one of them.

4. Type of bends. Most of them use smooth bends with no abrupt changes in cross section unless the change is part of volume tuning. I've seen a few cheapo intakes that used miter bends - avoid them.

5. Is it CARB legal? Depends on your smog laws whether this is something to worry about or not.

If you have FI dont even get a CAI, just smooth out your stock intake box and drop in a K&N . I have a Carbon fiber intajke and it sounds bad *** with my forge DV.
