What to get to the closest star?

Aim for the sun.

It is a medium class star and you will reach it in a reasonable amount of time. You will just be a cinder by the time you get there, but you will have reached a star.

Yes we can not even reach our own star as we would burn before we could reach it. Now if you mean another star system? We can't with our current knowledge. But then at one time not so long ago people believer that you could not break the sound barrier.

we can forever try to reach a star, and if we do, then what? if we have an inkling on what we even want to accomplish by doing that, it might justify the loss of a few lives-- as is wont to happen.

but what would justify the loss of a few lives? if by reaching a star we end all famine, we stop all wars, we treat our fellowmen equally and we give dignity to every soul we meet, would we justify the dangerous journey?

sometimes we wish for things we dont exactly need.

Everything on this Earth is composed of star dust. All matter originated in the stars. You've already reached one and have been there since you were born!

If we survive on Earth long enough, the star that we call the sun will expand to reach us, encompass us and incinerate us. Cheers.

if we could travel at the speed of light it would take us 4.6 years to get to the nearest star, however we are really far away from lightspeed. with our engine capabilities it would take a while, i don't know about a million years though.
