The best first aid treatment is to drink, drink, drink.
To some extent alkalising the urine helps to eradicate the germs and also soothe the bladder. You can try using bicarbonate of soda, 5ml (1 tea spoon) in half a glass of water, two or three times a day, or one of the over the counter cystitis remedies.
For similar reasons the folklore remedy is barley water or, these days, cranberry juice.
If the symptoms are any more than transient, you should contact your doctor, when next able to, regarding the possibility of antibiotics.

other tips

Keep the vaginal area clean, including wiping from the front to back after a bowel movement to prevent contamination of the urinary tract.

Use tampons and change every three to four hours, instead of sanitary pads. (The pads can act as a culture medium for fecal bacteria, which may then be rubbed against the urinary outlet and invade the bladder.)

Wear cotton undergarments, which allow air circulation and discourage the warm, moist environment needed for bacteria growth. Nylon pantyhose should have a cotton crotch.

Avoid wearing tight clothes in the genital area, such as control-top pantyhose and skin-tight jeans, as well as extended wearing of a wet bathing suit.

Urinate before and after intercourse and make sure that the partner's hands and penis are clean.

Drink plenty of fluids (cranberry juice has been shown to help prevent urinary tract infections.)

Urinate "when you see a bathroom" rather than when the urge to urinate becomes strong.

Always empty your bladder when you need to go - holding it in can really strain your bladder and cause burning and pain.

Empty your bladder before and after sex if you need to also.

Always wipe from front to back after going to the toilet to avoid transferring bacteria from the bowel.

Make sure you get enough to drink. Cranberry juice, water or fruit squash is soothing if you are suffering as its alkaline and does not irritate the bladder further.

Avoid anything that triggers it. Some women find certain drinks can set it off, although this is not true with everyone.

If you want to stay away from pills then try cranberry juice or tabs at least once a day.

Then...

You could also try to retrain your bladder by holding urine in for 5 mins longer than you feel the urge to go for a month or so and then increase that to 10 minutes.

If it is caused by sex, try being a little gentler, or changing position if your partner has a large penis. It can be caused by bruising your bladder which causes the bacteria to multiply.

Drink water before and after and try to go to the toilet before and after.

Cranberry juice as well as green tea is good as it cleans out your bladder.

Try 500mg of vitamin c daily. The excess is secreted in your urine, keeping it acidic and therefore preventing the growth of bacteria in the bladder. Also only ever wipe front to back, to pevent germs (e coli) from your bowel, entering your urinary tract.
