Pogo.com has chess. It is a free site. If you want to become a member there is a charge, but you can certainly play for free. Just sign up for a username.

yahoo games you can play chess for free. i think there is a site you have to pay for that has grand masters and other better players. but you will find good players on yahoo too

Yahoo has too many problems and cheaters. I recommend you try http://www.freechess.org for online play. Once you create your free account, download a free Windows interface from http://www.babaschess.net to avoid having to use a browser for online play. This will also eliminate any pop-ups and ads from interfering like they do at other popular sites.
