I read somewhere that pregnant women do get stuffy noses or it is harder to breathe. I can't remember why though. Have you heard of that? Do you know why? Someone on here stated that their nose is stuffy and she is pregnant too. That is what prompted this question. Thanks!

YES this does happen, it happened to a friend of mine and she lost her taste even after giving birth.

Why do I feel congested all the time?
Believe it or not, it's pretty common to have a runny or stuffed-up nose during pregnancy. About 20 to 30 percent of pregnant women have congestion without having allergies or a viral infection like the common cold. This condition even has a name: rhinitis of pregnancy. It can start as early as your second month and last until you have your baby or even a few weeks afterward.

Higher amounts of estrogen during pregnancy can contribute to swelling in the mucous membranes lining the nose and even cause you to make more mucus. What's more, the amount of blood in your body increases and your blood vessels expand during pregnancy, which can lead to swollen nasal membranes as well. Other hormones may also play a role.

it's due to increased hormones and increased blood flow. I am at 16 weeks andmine are awful. Go get a book called " what to expect when you are expecting" by Heidi Murkoff. It's the pregnancy bible and will help with all these questions. Your question as well as many others that you would not expect is in there. It's excellent in describing all of these little things that worry moms and help distinguish when something is "normal" or not.
Good Luck!

Because you're body is pumping around an extra 50% of its blood capacity, the extra blood gives you a stuffy nose as it swells the nasal tissues.

Yep. This is because the blood vessels in your nose swell up. This is also why pregnant women have nosebleeds easily. Try a saline solution. It helps.

Thinning of mucous membranes in your body causes your nose to get stuffy.

I sneezed like crazy throughout most of my pregnancy. It's just something that happens.

Your body is also just producing more body fluids anyway. You will notice more saliva, mucous, vaginal secretions, ear wax and you may notice your vision is a little blurry, especially if you wear contacts.

Ain't pregnancy grand!

I was told it's due to increased blood flow.
