How do you feel generally about DVD audio commentaries?

Are they too boring, too technical, too self-congratualtory, too dumbed-down or just right?

IT really depends. I only watch commentaries for certain movies and it depends on who is doing them. I usually like when they have the director with one or two stars. Those are usually funny because they tell stories about what happened off screen. Usually if it is simply the director witha producer or effects person, then it usually is too technical and boring for me. The rare exceptions there include star wars.

Most of the ones that I have heard are wonderful. Then again I am a film student so I like a lot of what most people could find as boring and technical. However, there are some that are flat out great/funny. For example, on the Wet Hot American Summer DVD there is a commentary where the creators only add fart noises to the film. And the Hunter S. Thompson commentary on the Fear and Loathing Criterion DVD is really entertaining.

I love audio-commentaries. They give you an opportunity to have a conversation with the filmmakers and/or the actors and get another view of the film from them. I am interested in the challenges and accomplishments that occurred during the film-making and this is the only opportunity to hear about it. Also, It's great when they talk about the background people in the film. I know of one film where the director, who is also a choreographer, put all of her assistants into the film and talked about them during the audio-commentary. It is really fascinating. Like a glimpse into another world.

It depends on whether or not it's an actor's commentary, director's, or production team. I think the actor's commentaries are really interesting. They'll tell funny stories and such. If it's a technical one I could care less, too boring.

some i really like, generally in comedies. i like to hear the fun facts and behind the scenes thought process. However some are really lame and boring, or just bazar. ever listened to the Anchorman commentary, they don't even talk about the dvd.

I will listen to the commentary if it is a movie I own and like.
So far the funniest commentary was from Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was commenting on Conan the Barbarian.

It depends on the movie and the commentary. I've seen some really good ones and some really bad ones.

Well, i think they are ok as far as entertainment is concerned. But it also depends on the means of its dissemmination. If the dissemmination is hampered, then it would be just as you have said: too boring, too dumbed down etc....

Overall, I'm not that impressed. I buy the DVD for the movie not some self-important actor/director's ego.
