The people tham you are sending Im's to may not have the same kind of aim have your friends download it for you the way you did. If you are sending things but are not getting a reply then they probably cant even see the things you are sending them.

you need to change your settings befor you log in at the top of the messenger click messenger click conections thier are 3 settings the last one worked best for me the first one is default

What is your firewall set to? Also Id try completely uninstalling... restart, and reinstall the messenger program... I hope it works.
