You have been in love - of that I am sure because you asked this question. Whether you are still in love or whether it has been overshadowed by the other things or necessities of life - love is eternally alive within you - because it resides in the heart - and it is an integral part of our soul. Sadness is the basic emotion that unrequited love attaches to itself. And sad songs are expressions of that unrequited love - they permeate to the soul and become expressions of our hidden sadness. And we are forever inseparable from the sad song become it is an expression of our deepest sentiments ......

Usually sad songs are related to something you went/are going through, and we relate to them and create a bonding to them because they express your feelings better than you.
We all have gone through pain from love, break-ups, and problems in our relationship/love department, and as we are humans we like to have a friend or something to rely our suffering into, and that something is usually songs, and as you are sad or in pain, sad songs.
Usually sad songs are very sentimental and touchy, so they "attack" our feelings when we are most vulnerable, and as we like the comprehension we get from the song, we become inseparable with it.
I have a lot of songs i became obssesed with when i was very unhappy about my bf: Dont speak by no doubt, Backstreet boys, and westlife (as you see they are all oldies for two reasons: i like oldies and i have been very happy about my bf the last 5 years i havent had to update, hahaha, that makes me happy too.) If u like my answer and it helped you with your question, feel free to choose me as best answer, because i wanna get to level three, please?
