Of course, the greatest playwright with the greatest plays is none other than Shakespeare. You have already mentioned 2 of his great plays, but there are many more and I am sure everyone knows them. Shakespeare, the incomparable genius for all time, has made his mark on civilization and humanity forever.
Now, that I have gotten this tribute out of the way, I have to say I have a fascination with Tennessee Williams and I love his plays. His plays such as The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire, Summer and Smoke, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Suddenly Last Summer, Sweet Bird of Youth, and Night of the Iguana have an erotic, sexual, psychological appeal for me that can't be beat.

Waaay too long a list to get into here, but I'll toss out one title:
"On the Verge, or the Geography of Yearning," by Eric Overmyer. Possibly my favorite play of the last 30 years, anyway. An absolutely giddy and BRILLIANT journey through space and time with our heroines, three Victorian lady explorers. One man plays eight separate roles in the play, including: a cannibal who just devoured a German dirigible pilot, Mr. Coffee (aka God), and Nicky Paradise (aka The Devil). A riotously funny AND bittersweet, deeply affecting play. It's all about the Spirit of Adventure that keeps us moving forward...and about the temptations of the modern world that keep some of us rooted in place.

The first play I ever really related to was Shakespeare's Macbeth, which I studied at school, although we had earlier studied The Merchant of Venice, and Romeo&Juliet. Maybe it was it's Celtic theme. Being Irish I have a soft spot for all Irish Playwrights, My current favourites being, "Dancing at Lugnasa" by Brian Freil and "Stones in Their Pockets" by Marie Jones both modern plays by living Authors. See both then you decide.

Proof and Fires in the mirror
Proof because it looks at the pyschology of the mind and family relations
Fires in the mirror because it delves into race relations between blacks and jews during the Crown Heights riots
Both are well written and have excellent monologues

I hate Shakespeare. Call me un-cultured but I like Disney on Broadway plays (Beauty and the Beast, Lion King)
