by mains you mean plugged into the wall?? If this is the case your battery is starting to fail. This is very bad to run your system this way. Either buy a new battery or keep it plugged in. The chips are made to run on a set number of volts and if you are losing that then it will damage your system.

Sounds like a defective or poorly made adapter. It shouldn't drain power from the laptop! It sounds dangerous, really. But your best solution is to completely detach it from the laptop when you unplug it.

mine goes into a power saving mode. I have to adjust screen brightness and sound volume and such with manual overide keys.

My bf work laptop does this too, he says it has to be plugged in because it goes dead so quickly.
