Most people believe that a PCs processor speed judges the overall speed but this is not the case. The first thing you need to look at is the amount, type, and speed of the RAM memory your computer is utilizing. Adding more RAM as well as faster RAM can go a long way in speeding up your machine and is in fact the deciding factor in the overall speed of the machine. This is because RAM basically translates into how much "deskspace" your PC has. Obvoiusly the more room you have on your desk the more stuff you can spread out and work on at one time. Beware of computer manufacturers that offer big name processors but scimp on RAM. As an example Windows XP's minimum RAM requirements to just run properly is 256Mb of PC 2100 memory. 256 being the amount, 2100 being the type and speed of the memory.

Other than serious Gaming. If you do a lot of video editing then faster is better but probably never enough. If you do a lot of Photo editing faster is always better. If you were an software engineer then program compiling and editing would benefit from a fast system. If you are doing a lot of 3D animation or rendering then no computer is fast enough.

Depends on what you do with your puter.. If you play games, it helps the games 'draw' faster and the motion isn't jerky and it looks good. It also helps with processes such as loading of pages on the web.
