A key account for a company can be a number of things. If you are a start-up, they are the account that lends you the most credibility. As an established business, they are the one you use as a reference for selling new prospects on your product.
Typically, a good key account gets a dedicated sales rep and usually a support team for the sales rep. Sometimes it could be some one from manufacturing that helps them with the integration of your product with theirs.
Sometimes it is someone that can train their reps on sales and marketing techniques.
The value of the key account dictates how much of your company's time and resources they should get.
And bottom line- it should be a win-win situation.
