The first duty of a head of state is to safeguard the interests of his people. Who here wants to argue that Bush has done this? We are now more insecure and at danger as a country than at any other time in history.

Since the end of the Cold War, the US has taken up the mantle of "Do-gooder of the Planet". Being that we see ourselves as the only real superpower in the world, we have now set out to mold the wolrd in our image (Democracy and Capitalism).

Bush Sr. started it with "defending" Kuwait from Iraq in the Persian Gulf War. Then Clinton continued it with our "intervention" in Kosovo, and now Bush Jr. has the War on Terror ( or Terrrr as he pronounces it..lol).

As far as our country's security, we are always in danger in one form or another. During the Vietnam era, the country was one major incident away from possible anarchy (just read up on some of the tactics and policies created by both thwe government and law enforcement during that time with regards to clooege student protests). many people really feared a major uprising during those years. During the Clinton era we experienced terrorist attacks on US soil. During the Reagan years we were attacked several times by terrorist groups. Bottom line is that we think were are less secure than ever in history because we are experiencing it now...but just ask peole that lived through those other times and they will tell you about the fear that was felt back when those attacks happened.

Don't get me wrong, I am not giving Bush a free pass. The policies of the US and our very way of life contradict the morals of many people around the world and the more fanatical elements of these people will always try to "defeat the evil and immoral US"...And the US will always be there to "crush the forces of terror and tyranny".

What is boils down to is that we feel we need to show the world what our freedom can bring, and those that we call "terrorists" or "rogue nations" will fel that the US is a force of evil that is trying to pervert thier culture and way of life and they will resist with their last breath if need be. It is a battle that neither side will win in our lifetimes.

In the equation, you can scratch the "exporting democracy" from our expenditures. Our founding fathers planned it where the like-minded business men could control government when they formed a Republic instead of a Democracy.

On the war thing, I'd count up the totals for Vietnam too. Nothing says "futile" like killing four million Vietenamese to avoid losing a trade partner.

More than we paid in.

Just like in the post reconstruction South. Plantation owners kept farm-workers/slaves in debt at the company store.

You work all week and the money goes to pay your debt.

As for more secure. I like the argument that the only job of government is to provide security. When 9/11 happened all of Washington was asleep at the wheel. They could not admit that they had been too busy taking bribes from industry to "Provide Security" So they invented Homeland Security. Claiming America needed a special Homeland Security Agency.

For 230 years The United States Government and al its appurtenances was the source of provisional defense. Now we need a shadow government to provide for the people.

GIVE ME A BREAK?!?!? I am so into firing the whole bunch. They are in violation of public trust.

How many more have been spent in collecting useless data and dumb polls such as how much animal flatulence affects the ozone. (I'll bet none and who really cares)
