For the record, I haven't seen Pirates of the Caribbean. I'm going on a book about transvestism which argues that most men, around Charles II's time wore more feminine clothing nowadays, clothing which became more elaborate among the upper classes and was carried among pirates to even more elaborately ornate dress. They were recognised by their "feathered hats, silk stockings, ribbons" and also tended to keep catamites.

The real question is 'Are drag queens wannabe priates?'

Well if you go by the book you're talking about, then no. They weren't drag queens, they were just emulating the upper classes, and then took it a step further.

Keeping a catamite doesn't make one a drag queen, it makes one a pedophile.

As lunagirl pointed out, the fops appear to be the cross dressers. That photo looks like it could have been taken at a tea dance in Provincetown.

WHOAH! You've been watching WAY too much Pirates of the Carribean. Just because Johnny Depp wears tons of makeup doesn't mean real pirates did. Real pirates were (and are) ugly, have scurvy (rotten teeth and gums), and are total assholes. They were very masculine and do not go around prancing and singing in the rain. You need to get out more!

I'm sure some liked to dabble!!
They were quite likely to have woman mascarading as boys on board, some saucy she-pirates had a woman in every port too!!
Pirates were the original democrates, they elected leaders, woman were even elected as captains!! Freed slaves often served too, they too were entitled to vote and even became captains themselves!
Yaargghhh , thar she blows

No. Look at men's fashion from those times and you'll see it was very in vogue for a man to pay as much attention to his attire as women do. Nothing odd, nothing drag queenie, just the status quo

The earliest drag queens were "fops." If you don't know what a fop is check this out:

Yes, the person in pink is a man. I see him every year at the Ren Fest in Kansas City.

I like it both ways. Pirates were early drag queens and drag queens are wannbe pirates! They are not mutually exclusive.
