I will be traveling to Amsterdam, Netherlands during the month of September. Whenever I search online for a place to stay, I seem to only find very expensive places. Does anyone have information on how one would secure their money and valuables while staying at a Youth Hostel? Seems like it is pretty risky to simply trust that nobody will help themselves to your wallet, passport, etc.

Thank you in advance.

you can find pretty cheap accommodation in September if you check out the following booking site....www.booking.com...
please avoid traveling between 7 and 12 September, due to a large international congress, IBC. The whole city will be packed and the hotels that still have a few rooms left will sell them at extreme high rates.
And as far as your valuables...just carry them on your body, no place is safe enough or you must place them in a locker which you can find in some hotels or at the airport or central railway station (payable services)

Of course it depends what you would like to spend and with how many men/woman you would like to share a room,.but at the site of www.europahotels.nl you will find a hotel called Stayokay, where you have a bed and breakfast for € 23,75 (sharing a room with 10 others)...or do pay for Old Quarter hotel € 35,00 for a single room (with a shared bathroom) here again inclusive of breakfast...so secure a place with your creditcard (for no show only) and pay after you have stayed! I do find those offers pretty cheap, do you?

Would appreciate your feed-back!

I stayed at this youth hostel:

They had a secure front desk area and lockers. I never had anything stolen the 2 or 3 times I stayed there.

I stayed at the Winston, great artsy hotel. Don't remember just how much it cost, but it must have been reasonable. Otherwise my cheapskate ex boyfriend never would have paid for it. But we did have a HUGE oil painting of a vagina over our bed, maybe that made him whip out his wallet.

Try this website http://www.easytobook.com/

For hostels try http://www.hostels.com/en/index.html

I would not keep my valuables in a hostel. Carry it with you and keep in safe in a travel wallet close to your body.

Good luck and have a good trip!

Try www.eurocheapo.com and then choose Amsterdam. It usually has the best bargains for most european cities! I use it often! ;-)
