Jimmy Stewart... he was versatile, and could really bring the character to life... make it believable.
And I love Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
Or Henry Fonda... for the same reason... and he's brilliant in 12 Angry Men... no musical track, no backdrops... 12 men in a room... acting their collective butts off.

Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone in the Godfather. He did a great performance in the film. THe studio did not want him in the role at all and refused to pay him for it. What a phenomenal film! The studio also did not want Al Pacino in the film either....shows what they know.

H started in westerns then he took ont he dirty harry series. He is just an all around legendary badass in movies. He has been around forever and has only put out a few bad movies (unforgiven is filth) now he is directing great films like million dollar baby. and blood work.

I would have to say Judy Garland. Not only did she do a fantastic job in the Wizard of Oz, but many other films as well. She had a tremendous beautiful voice, and she had such great talent.

Cary Grant and Gregory Peck. Cary Grant was a comedic genius - perfect timing. He could do the drama roles too.
Edited to add: I forgot to say my favorite female starts. Katherine Hepburn (especially acting with Cary Grant) and Audrey Hepburn. Grace Kelly was amazing too.

Gene Kelly - The first time I ever saw him dance I was hooked. His legs were amazing. He wasn't the "elegant" dancer but he was fantastic. My favorite of his movies is The Pirate with Judy Garland and Walter Slezak. If you can catch it when TCM is airing it - it is definitely worth a viewing!
