i think your using the phrase the sky is the limit out of its context. Outerspace is merely a region outside of earth and its atmosphere. No one really knows how far the universe is spread out or if it has an ending at all! Hubble Deep Space has peered about 12-14 billion light years into the universe. In the last couple years i think Hubble has caught some images beyond that and it seems to just be all blackness so whatever is the reality of our universe putting limits on it is hardly concievable. If you think about how tiny we are compared to the Earth then think about how insignifigant Earth is to the Universe.

"The sky" is not the same as "the atmosphere." The sky originally meant anything above the earth, out to heaven. That area now includes what we call space. "The sky is the limit" means there is no upper limit.
