After 3 degrees and 10 years spent building a computer-based career, I'm leaving this career to get into carpentry.

My wife got a great job that gives us the financial freedom for me to take the paycut.

How should I get started?

You might find a carpenter who would let you work as an apprentice. That's how I did it when I was younger.

I found that the best way for me was to buy a house that needed extensive repairs and then do them, since it was my own houe it didn't matter as much, or maybe it mattered more :-) .
But point being one thing lead to another and now I own a remodeling company and have several investment properties. It will be a hard change, since i also came from the corporate world, but when you put your ehad down on the pillow at night, you have a good feeling about what you did that day. Hard work is good for the sole. And its only hard if you dont enjoy it.

Take care and good luck

It's probably a good time to find a city and guilds or BTEC course at your local FE college - they'll start in September
