I like the laundry basket idea...but don't forget that the mom 2 be could use some items to pamper herself also....bath salts, lotions, home manicure or pedicure set..or a spa appt. gift card.....what pregnant woman does not deserve to have a personal gift to enjoy before the baby comes.....she better pamper herself before the baby comes...lol

Books, no one ever thinks to buy the baby books. Reading to a child is very important and should start out right away. Helps stimulate the mind. Last thing I bought for a baby shower was a bag full of baby books. I recommend Boynton's Greatest Hits: Volume 1 and Boynton's Greatest Hits: Volume 2 by Sandra Boynton. I ordered all my books online from buy.com. Out of all of the books I received the above 2 sets were the best. Each set costs around $15.

My days of buying cute clothes and toys for my kids is over but for my friends it's just beginning. Every shower I go to I bring 2 gifts. First I buy something that was requested on a registry for the baby. Second I get a small makup bag and fill it with body wash, shampoo, lotion, fuzzy socks, etc. all the comforts a new mom need when she goes to the hospital. I don't know about where you live but our hospitals give out the worst shapoo and soap I've ever seen. More than one new mom has thanked me profusely for thinking of her needs.

A laundry basket with lotion, diapers ,wipes, baby oil ,infant mylicon/tylenol/saline nasal spray and "nasal plunger" (you would be surprised how these items come in handy) also a few movies for mom to watch in the middle of the night when the little one is awake. And one thing everyone seems to forget is to buy the little cotton mittens to go over baby's hands so baby will not scratch themselves or momma. The other thing which is very important (but not until you need it) is a item called "PINXAV" you can get it at any walmart or drugstore. It is for diaper rashes and it is wonderful.

If the mother registered at a store like Babies R Us, Target, Walmart, etc go see what she has on her list and pick something from that, or get her a gift card for that store. Gift cards are nice because then if they did not receive something on the list they can go get it themselves, and you don't run the risk of doubling up on a gift that may not have been removed by the store (they are supposed to remove the item from the registry if they are informed that it is for someone that registered)

Get a layette. It consists of (very small)newborn t-shirts, socks, bibs, receiving blanket, wash cloths, baby wash, nail clippers, small diapers, q-tips, medicine measure. Bundled in a basket or decorative box. Most of these items are only $1 at the dollar tree. But it will be just what is needed when the baby is born. She will definitely think of how thoughtful you were right away, when using these items.

If they don't have a baby registry then buy what you can afford. I like the following:

1. Dr. Browns baby bottles
2. Onesies
3. Receiving blankets
4. Gift set w/ scroll for birth certificate and baby teeth
5. Boppy w/ cover
6. Snugli baby carrier
7. Gift certicate to Wal-Mart or Babiesrus

I forgot the name, but at target there is a brown bear and on the back is a turn knob and when you turn it, it plays noises someone recorded from a mothes womb so the baby hears what it heard inside the mom. my baby is 8 months and loves it. I actually don't recamed diapers sice you don't know how big the baby is gonna be or what size cuz if the baby is bigger( mine was 10 lbs) my baby didn't even fit in newborn she went right to size one.

For something original try picture frames and/or gift certificate(s) to a local photo studio. I never thought about that while I was pregnant, but I got my baby's picture taken every 3 months until she was a year old and then at 18months and every years since and that cost adds up FAST. Trust me --mommy-to-be-- will USE this gift for sure. And like me probably isn't even thinking about that yet.
