Because Starbucks was an attempt to imitate real Italian coffee houses, by someone from the USA who missed them when they went home.
Therefore, when in Italy, why would anyone want the imitation, when they can have the authentic, genuine article?
Wanting a Starbucks in Italy, is like wanting a Pizza Hut when in Italy, the home of real, delicious, authentic pizzas. Or like wanting a jar of Uncle Ben's sweet and sour chicken, when in Hong Kong. Or, a Budweiser when in Belgium. Or Smirnoff when in Poland. Or a Wendy's chilli or taco or whatever, when in Mexico.
Seems like you're complaining that you can't have an overpriced, commercialised, imitation chain brand; while being in the home of the original and best, authentic, real thing.

I agree with the comments here - it is Italy - the home of the espresso and the cappuccino - they have been doing this for years and they are the best at it. The fact that yet another American import has become so omnipresent on the high street (and they are still opening the damn things twenty yards apart) does not mean that the rest of the world must follow suit...

I think Starbucks is OK for the States, but why don't you just enjoy your coffee in a nice little cafe when you are in Italy?

Oh my goodness. You are in a country where coffee is a delicacy so the choices are incredible. You are in one of the last places in the world that you would need a Starbucks...
I can't believe you - I should be in Italy, not you.

Must be incredibly annoying not to have the chance to pay vast sums for a cup of coffee, yes. In Italy you have some of the best cafes and coffee shops in the world - why do you want an American conglomerate to come and steal your culture????

holly **** are you kidding? I am Eropean when I first came to the US I picked up apot of coffee @7-11 and thought it was tea. Starbucks is better I confess, probably the best you can get here but it's still crap. Try italian coffe it's bangin' it's the best. I f you are used to the american nasty wuss "coffee" though it might be a bit strong for you. Be careful because a shot of real good and strong espresso may just shake you up. Hell I wish I could enjoy some italian coffee right now...
