Many people there don't believe in separation between Mosque (or Church) and State.
And you can't have true democracy where holy books and religious experts dictate what the laws should be and how they should be enforced.
When there is no separation between religion and state, then religious dictates are more important than people's wishes. People in government must represent religious interests before anything else. And in such an environment, elected representatives of the people cannot have much authority or power to make independent decisions.
When elected representatives must submit to the authority of unelected religious experts, then you cannot have true democracy.

Democracy is nothing to get excited over. Here in the US it is a fraud controlled by big moneyed interests that own the broadcasting industry and bias news coverage to con voters into voting for big business Republican looters and if a Democrat happens to win, no problem, they just have their puppets on the courts steal the election for the Republican. They probably get the same quality of leadership in the Middle East that the Republicans give US here. Its certainly nothing worth caring about any more.

Democracy doesn't work anywhere. Look at America and Britain - they are becoming more and more Fascist every day, and they're supposed to be two of the world's great democracies. Racial profiling? They'll be making Muslims wear yellow crescents next.
Read 1984. It is your duty while you are still free. Read it - it is now our oracle.

It does and it already exists and works in Iraq, Lebanon, and Israel, among other places. Just because there are terrorists present or frequent wars, it doesn't mean that a Democracy didn't exist.
The U.S. and the U.K. also have terrorists and wars. Who would (seriously) consider them to NOT be democracies?

Oh, that's simple.... Religion!
If they could separate church and state, it may have a chance.
It is unlikely that this would happen due to the fact that everything they do revolves around religion!
Another question that should have been asked before we engaged in this war..... Do they want Democracy?

Democracy, strictly a political conduit for freedom and liberty is not compatible with countries with Islamic governments where there's suppression of free choice (ie: Iran). However, this is not entirely true in the case of Egypt and Turkey where there's a very strict separation of church and state.

Well there's a posative attitude. Can you imagine how hard it would be to initiate a free democratic system in the US if we started today with all the differnet views and religions, but you should start somewhere.
Do you actually think what they have had uo until now has worked?

In a democracy,,
,you have to meet in the middle and bend a little in each direction,
The middle east is dominated by religious beliefs,,,,,,,,, that will not bend,,,,,,,,
thous you get what you have now,,
a bunch of religious fanatics killing each other.

Democracy doesn't work anywhere, except for brief periods -- just long enough for people to realize they can use government power to advance their own interests at the expense of everybody else's.

democracy works when people are free to change their minds. in the middle east people would vote along religous lines regardless of policy (a bit like northen ireland) this tribal head count would lead to fustration as it would mean the balance of power would never change. also if you vote for one party and i vote for the other your not going to kill me for it are you,
