Before you buy a turtle...think about it. Is it legal to buy one? in many counties its forbidden. And realize that turtles live for a very long time. You can have grown kids and this turtle can still be there.....you really are prepared to take care of a pet for 50 years in a row??

Aquatic turtles are more apt to bite than tortoises. Also, wild turtles are likely to be more agressive. Turtles that have been handled a lot will not bite you. I have had many turtles that let me pet them on the head and also enjoyed being scratched on the neck. I have even had my finger trapped in one of my tortoises shell when a loud noise startled it and it did not bite me. As long as you spend time every day w/ your turtle you should never have a problem.

Some turtles will bite, but not many. It mostly depends on the individual turtle's personality, just like many other pet animals. I doubt any store bought turtle would do any damage even if you did get bit, however. Hope this helps.

Some do, some don't. Depends on their personality. In my experience water turtles (ESPECIALLY when handled) can feel threatened very easily, and any time I've been bitten (or had a bite attempted) by a turtle/tortoise, it's always been an aquatic turtle. I think that it's just instinct because you are taking them out of their element (water) and it makes them very uncomfortable. On the other hand, I've generally found box turtles and tortoises to be more docile and to tolerate more handling (though they can tend to crap on you... especially Russian tortoises in my experience). Doesn't mean you won't find a friendly water turtle or a bitey tortoise, really depends on the animal.

The snapping turtle does. Most of them will only bite if you look like food.

No but if you want the turtle to not bite you than get it when it is young and train it to get use to you!

I own a box turtle and the only thing it bites is meal worms (Food) and vegetables (Food). Turtles that do bite you are snapping turtle, hence the name.
