If you were a police officer responding to a possible murder and it is in an area where a serial killer has commited several murders and when you pull up at the scene and you see 2 people leaving the area....one male going south and a female going north...would you be profiling or doing good police work if you chose to go after the male because 92% of serial killers are male?

when we use words like profile people tend to have or look at it in a negative context like it is wrong .
when i go to the store i profile my fruits and vegtables and pick the ripe tomatos without worm holes cause i know the ones with worm holes may have worms .I like big baked potatoes so again i choose them also .Grapes are checked for color and crispness ,and so on.
profiling is not a dirty word and lawyers at some time in the past said that profilling is wrong as a tool for crime intervention .
SO people that routinly got stopped by FLORIDA highway patrol with Dade county plates on 95 north of palm beach county who are of CUBAN or minority backgrounds driving new cars are stopped and checked for drugs and it worked
DRUGS and cash found by using this method .
LETS do more profilling if it gets the job done .

Profiling has always and will always be a big part of good police work. There are well paid people whos "specialty" is profiling. It is an absolutly VITAL tool for hunting serial killers and the like.

no. first you must look at the scene, just becasue 2 people are in the area does not mean they know anything about a murder. yo did say they were leaving the area and not the crime scene which are 2 dif things.

I'm sorry but I believe that profiling makes perfect sense. I would be doing good police work with going after the most likely suspect.

I would try to stop both of them. If one runs we always chase the one that runs even tho it could be a distraction. They are both possible witnesses, you have probable cause to stop them for a brief detention. Terry v. Ohio.

Obviously you would go after whoever you thought was guilty.
Profiling is more of a policy than a spur of the moment act.

I wouldn't "GO" after either, I would try and make a mental note about their descriptions.

Shoot them both and then worry about who did it.
