Only China and the US won't sign. Landmines kill and blow the legs off some 20 000 kids in Africa a year. Could it be that the US still manufactures 70% of these landmines, and don't want to lose the business?

The landmines between north and south Korea was offered as a rationale. This of course is a completely facetious argument. Does anybody honestly believe that removing this mines (or even refusing to plant more) would cause an invasion of the south. I think the squadrons of F-18, helicopter gunships and heavy machine guns might suffice.

Basically the US always puts its industial-military complex before humanity.

Because they are too powerful and don't care about human rights or what the rest of the World thinks. They keep the American public ignorant (which is not hard) so they can terrorize the rest of the World.

Landmines are a cowardly weapon that wreck the countries where they are used, plus they are cheap.

Why do Americans put on armour to play sport? Why do they drop bombs instead of fighting like men? Why do they napalm, landmine, nuclear bomb and god knows what else then whine on about WMDs?

Why don't they sign the treaties on climate change?

Good question. They should sign the treaty!
The US has other more effective "smart" weapons to maintain the military advantage.

I love landmines. I put them out in my yard to stop the squirrels.

the claim they made at the time was that it would interfere with their sovereignty, the same reason they gave for not signing the ban on child labour
edit; what village idiot says about the other treaties is true, the US has refused to sign them when they have been proposed.

Arrogance. The US doesn't want to be restricted in any way to defend itself. Regardless of the method.

I would imagine that if there was a treaty proposed on Biological Weapons, Chemical Weapons, etc... they wouldn't sign that either.

Signing a treaty like that would probably blow up in our faces.

It's not in our national interest to sign the treaty.

Get this - even Queen Hillary the Great won't sign it after she becomes our next President!

A commercial decision, I'm afraid; but also trying to escape moral responsibility for its military actions over the years, and those of its friends.
