A caste system is more or less a "class" system in a society. Yes, it's infamous in India but here's something to think about:
We have a caste system here in the States, it's called "socioeconomic class". You have the "priveledged few" (upper class), the "propertied elite" (middle class), and the "trailer trash" (lower class).
Most of the priveledged few are very Republican because it protects their financial interests, and they don't have to show compassion for those underneath them.
The propertied elite are too busy keeping up with and competing with each other in order to secure their place in society.
And the "trailer trash" (applies to all races, btw)? Some of them have just given up trying to compete and live off the system. Others attempt to live their lives to the fullest (good on them!), and usually end up in trouble with the law for daring to think outside the box.

ranked groups based on heredity within rigid systems of social stratification, especially those that constitute Hindu India. Some scholars, in fact, deny that true caste systems are found outside India. The caste is a closed group whose members are severely restricted in their choice of occupation and degree of social participation. Marriage outside the caste is prohibited. Social status is determined by the caste of one's birth and may only rarely be transcended. Certain religious minorities may voluntarily constitute a quasi-caste within a society, but they are less apt to be characterized by cultural distinctiveness than by their self-imposed social segregation. A specialized labor group may operate as a caste within a society otherwise free of such distinctions (e.g., the ironsmiths in parts of Africa). In general, caste functions to maintain the status quo in a society

A henious social custom, neither to the benefit of the concerned nor to the nation, but for exploitation only of the target group at the hands of power brokers including the government in office, irrespective of their political cast ism.

Long long ago, community heads devised a system to
share job responsibilities according to intellegence
level of the individual. So that there will always be a group
of people available to execute a particular job. Possibly
it was an innovetive idea at that time, which worked well.
Now that idea is obsolete. Sale by date.

A form of religious racism practised by Hindus, you can only marry and socialise within your own caste,I think it has broken down a little except for the lowest castes which still get a pretty hard time.
