If you need to ask, then you don't deserve a VW.
They are far superior to any of the Fords and hold their value long after the Focus is worth the same as a tank of Fuel.

Depends what you want - the Golf tends to ride better, the Focus tends to handle better (although the latest Golf is closer to the Focus than the Golf IV was).
The Golf's diesel engines have always been good. The early Focus diesel engines were a bit course, not quite as efficient as they could have been, but the later common-rail "TDCi" versions are good. The Focus may be a better bet for a 1.6 or 2.0 petrol.
Contrary to perceived wisdom, many reliability surveys place the European-built Focus much higher than the Golf - one German report even placed it ahead of the Corolla.
However the Golf does have higher perceived quality - i.e. softer touch, less shiny materials in the interior.
Drive them both, on a variety of roads (take at least an hour's test-drive before buying) and buy the one you feel most suits your driving style, or that you fit better.

VW Golf looks better, but VW Golfs and Polos have have been known to have gearbox problems when still relatively new so be warned!

Being a ford focus owner ( 2003 ZX3 Coupe) I'd say Buy the VW.
Focus quality is waay poor. I had to fix company flaws with after market parts to get it to standard. Example...Brake rotors, tires.
For the money your planning on spending on a small coupe I'd also advice you to consider a Honda Accord.

GOLF GOLF GOLF. Why? Because it's a VW. And because it's not a Ford, too.

Golf. Better standard of plastic fittings. Ford plastic looks cheap.

Yes, gotta be a Golf !!
Alot more class, also you have the build quality, reliability, and holds its value better. The engines are bullet-proof and will run for years and years.
Unless you want to join the "salesman" brigade, driving a Ford, also Fords are alot more prone to rusting, and, and and... :)
Golf it is. ;)

Buy a Golf Gti, one of the best and most desirable cars around, they are easy to get parts for , reliable , fast, fun to drive and they hardly depriciate in value when the time comes to sell them.

Golf. More reliable, slower depreciation and much much cooler. Fords are still rust-buckets, whatever anyone says.
