In 2002 the 2.4L I4 in the CRV switched from a timing belt to a chain.
In small engines with an interference design, the timing belt must be changed at the interval suggested by the manufacturer. Because if the belt broke, a piston could strike a valve, causing severe engine damage.
Your Honda does have an interference engine, but also has a timing chain. The chain lasts longer than a belt, but will also have a change interval.
Usually a timing chain will become loose or worn before it breaks, becomming loud or upsetting the spark timing before it breaks (but not always).
While a chain may offer superior longevity to a belt, if packaging isn't a concern, some engines are spin-free designs, meaning if the belt or chain were to break, the engine would stall, as opposed to destroying it's self. Larger, taller engines are often spin-free designs.
Ultimately, a great car with a timing belt could ultimately cost you less than a crappy car with a timing chain. There's a lot more to compare than just a design feature or two.

RE:
Does a 2003 Honda CR-V have a timing chain?
Went to a Mazda dealer that was pushing the fact that their cars have timing chains, but I could've sworn that was something that I have on my current '03 crv.

Any internal combustion engine has a timing chain or belt. The timing chain, or belt, is used to regulate the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves. The engine's crank, the part that the pistons cause to turn, turns the belt on a certain ratio (one small wheel, one big wheel) which causes the intake and exhaust valves to cycle open and closed. It could be that Mazda was trying to imply that the chain is more reliable and offers better performance than a timing belt, I'm not sure. Depending on who you ask, when you ask, and what particular application they're using the car for will get you a different answer as to which is the best.

All HOndas have timing belts -- not chains. Replace them every 60,000 miles or you could face a really expensive repair later.
It is also true that Mazdas are one of the few manufacturers whose engines will not destroy themselves if the timing chain does go.
