It seems like every smoker I know just throws what's left of their cigarettes out their car windows or drops them on the curb. If it were anything else, it'd be considered littering. Why is this considered okay, or, at the very least, why do you smokers do it instead of finding an ashtray?

I go through this every weekend when we have a part there will be dozens of cigarettes on the yard by the deck. I maintain smokers are all pigs but then I always wind up hurting someone's feelings. They tend to be inconsiderate and self centered as they see the world as their ashtray.

Not all smokers are like that. I know there are a lot of selfish smokers around. You know, those who think their "rights" are being breached because other people want to breathe clean air. I don't understand why people would want to smoke in a car anyway. I think that the whole thing about butts being biodegradable is wrong(no offence) to whoever mentioned it) because, if they don't care enough not to throw the things around, they aren't going to care about that sort of thing.

Ashtrays are very rare while walking along the street, they can't throw them in a bin in case they aren't out properly and will cause a fire, but I agree that in a car they should have an ashtray.

It is rude, but you are right. I think with the bad habit of smoking comes that bad habit too. There is actually a new company that has designed portable ashtray tins that smokers can buy and carry in thier pocket to avoid throwing the butts down.

I'm sure there are considerate smokers who never drop a butt anywhere, but (haha) always look for a trash can. But (haha) it is disgusting to see so many butts everywhere in a big city. But (haha) let's not just single out the smokers. What about gum chewers? Disgusting! They spit anywhere and everywhere. City sidewalks across the world are covered with sticky, filthy goo from people's mouths. It's a veritable open sewer, and way harder to remove than butts. In London, they are really cracking down on these two things, writing tickets for butts and gum spitting. There was a CNN video on it , but it's archived now and you have to pay to see it or try CNN Pipeline on the trial. It was called "London's Butt Busters" and you can find it by searching CNN's video player.

Some smokers are lazy - I'm not one of them, but some are, and I'm pretty sure it IS considered littering. I carry a portable ashtray with me in case I can't find one.

It's better than having them in the car. How many people notice the butts on the side of the road? Most of the time they disappear before enough collect to notice. It's a good way to provide job security for the street sweepers.

who cares. dont you have anything else to complain about. so people drop butts out a window. they get pushed to the side and you will never see them again. if someone smoked in your car you wouldnt want that lingering in your ashtray and ud throw it out the window cuz it stinks. and dont pretend like youve never littered. i love how everyone who answers this question likes to pretend that they dont have bad habits. GET OVER YOURSELVES! get off your high horse

Most smokers are very selfish and only care about themselves. That is why they smoke in the car with their kids in the back but they are sooo nice to open the window, like it makes it any better.
Smokers deserve the lousy health they get.

Im not a smoker, and I know what you mean , I hate walking anywhere these days, because everywhere where you walk , you seem to be walking over peoples cigarettes buts.
I urge everyone who smokes , to please dispose of your cigeratte butts with common sense, and just wait till you find a bin.
How would you like it , If I came and dropped bits of rubbish on your lawn.
