Nothing special due to his being left handed. Leave him alone. He will figure out for himself. Some suggestions from this site may be useful though.

I am left handed and I write better than some righties. Everyone is different. My husband is a borderline genius but his handwriting is deplorable. When I write I hold the pen with my thumb and hold it with my pointer finger and my middle finger with it resting on top of the other two. I place the paper facing to the left...just like righties place it to the right. If his handwriting is really bad consider getting him the tablets that practice printing and cursive and have him use that at night for maybe 20-30 minutes.

There really isn't a correct method. I know a left-handed person who holds the pen and writes just like a right-handed person. But most left-handed people I come across tend to hold the pen just the opposite of a right-handed person (i.e. right-handed pen points upward, left-handed pen points downward). I would just let him write in which ever way makes him feel the most comfortable. Some people just have messy handwriting, my husband is one of them.

It might be time to ask the teachers at school. See what they feel. You might also want to ask about having an occupational therapist see him. My son started having problems writing in kindergarten. He didn't qualify for services in school but my insurance covered occupational therapy and his teacher wanted to wait and see but I said I have insurance and the O.T. at the school told me to go ahead.
My son has been receiving OT for over a year and I am going to continue until the OT feels that she has gone as far as she can. Their job is to help a person do better with the chores of daily living.
He will be going into the 2nd grade. He had a problem printing so now we are learning curvsive. Printing is hard because it is broken. Cursive is all connected together. If you can find an OT with pediatric experience that would be more of a benefit. Also if you could find an OT who is sensory intergration certified. They may be a few reasons as to why he is having problems. The sensory intergration part helps us to understand why children might have difficulty learning. It won't measure language development, academic achievementbut helps relate it to the process of learning.
I myself was surprised that there would be help out there--everyone was saying that they don't get good at writing until about 3rd grade. My concern was that he had struggled for 6 months in kindergarten and how much longer did it need to go on.
on.
The OT may be even to help with some suggestions that would make it easier for him. Being left handed has got to be hard so I don't want to give any suggestions on the correct method because there may be some other suggestions that would be suited more for him--rather than if there is a correct way.

Sometimes bad handwriting cannot be improved on much, regardless of the amount of practice time, and proper pen holding techniques. Some of the brightest people around cannot seem to do anything about their illegible handwriting, so they have resorted to printing, and signing their signature after the printed message.

Most of the time it is the oppisite of a right handed person!! I don't really know many people who are left handed that have very pretty hand writing. So you might be out of luck on that one... Good Luck with it though.

As a lefty myself I have noticed that most of us left-handers tend to hold our hand and pen differently from one individual to another. Your best bet is to allow him to find a position that is comfortable and will allow him to see what he is writing. Myself I use the curved hand and write from above the line. He’ll figure it out.
