This was true 20 years ago when I was going to school in London. But as far as I know it is the "Ye Olde Jerusalem Pub" in Nottingham. It is even billed as the oldest Pub in England on the outside of the building. Built into the side of the hill/rock, I think they had said it was around 900 years old. But I'm sure the ale is not that old. I can't remember what it looked like inside, but as as many people know, pubs in England are usually dark. Good luck.

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is the oldest pub (1187). There is another Pub in Nottingham (1211), but I think the second oldest pub is in St. Albans. Sorry i don't know the name of it.
