In simple terms, the supply of heat energy to the atoms makes them vibrate. To vibrate they require more space than to remian stationary. They create this extra space by expanding. Atoms in a material are always in some sort of vibratory motion (which theoretically ceases at absolute zero) over a range of amplitudes. As the atoms gain energy supplied by heat, their movements become more energetic and the average vibratory amplitudes increase. Each atom therefore takes up more space during its vibration than it would at a lower temperature. The bulk material therefore accupies more space. This is the cause of thermal expansion.

Thermal expansion occurs because the potential energy well binding atoms together is not symmetric. Consequently, as the hotter atoms vibrate more their equilibrium shifts.
If the potential were symmetric then there would be no expansion.

When a matter is heated it gains energy which is converted into kinetic energy in the atoms , so when the atoms are heated they gain energy which allows them to vibrate faster and move more which causes expansion.
