My son is 3 months old and he is to the point where he likes to ball his fits up and he has a very good grip it is hard to get his hanf undone and keep it that way so does anyone have a good idea how to clip his nails I have tried when he is asleep but it is like he knows and he keeps them balled when he is sleeping to. I need to cut them though cause they are long and he is in the stage of sucking on his thumb and fist so I dont want him to cut his gums or his eye or anything when he rubs them.

Well, I have to struggle with my baby-girl sometimes too, but I´ve always been able to put my thumb in her hand, she is gripping it, and then i kinda lift the fingers(or bend if you like) them back a little, not that i´m hurting her in any way..and then just do the nails as quickly as possible, while talking or making funny noises to her, so that she´s looking at me..

I have tried cutting nails while asleep, after a bath, in daddy's arms, and in her bouncer chair. It can be challenging since we don't want to cut their skin or them. What I do when trimming nails is to push back on the pads of the finger tips so I reduce the chance of cutting her. This has been a big help. You have to cut them as quick as you can, but, give yourself some time as they will start to get used to it. As with anything that is new to them, everything is about time.

When he is asleep make a small cut with the clippers then gently tear the nail across. Babys nails are very soft so they peel . His nail will not have a sharp edge from clippers so he wont scratch himself. Learned this from a nurse.

I know that it is hard but you just need to hold his hand in yours pin him down gently with your elbow and cut his nails.. I have a 4 month old and this is what I do. He is starting to just give in and realize I am not going to give in until I am done. You have to keep their nails short they can hurt themselves, cut their eye their gum etc
hope that helped

to get him to open his little fist, put a small amount of pressure on the inside of his wrist. it will make the fingers straighten out enough that you can get a finger in there. my kids have always been really hard to get their nails clipped as babies. i usually do it while they are nursing. and i would never tear the baby's nails. i did this to my daughter one time and it tore way below the quick and she ended up with a nasty little sore there. the safest tool is a small pair of manicure scissors.

I always did this while I was nursing my baby.
That way the baby was distracted, happy and not going anywhere for awhile. I just got settled with some pillows and used the clippers.
Not so easy if you need your hands for bottle-feeding, (that's another advantage of breastfeeding--its hands-free!--) but you could get second set of hands to help...
good luck,--its a tricky job, but you are so right, its got to be done!

Kids at this age does likes this.

what worked for me was ---i use to make my daughter sleep in my lap with head on one knee n legs on another knee.i use to sit cross leg.

then put finger between heer fingers n one by one i use to cut the nails. u have to keep on rocking the knee on which head will be lying.

to make more comfortable try putting pillows under baby's head n then rock n on the other side put ur fingers between his so that he shud not wake up .n cut the nails.

Babies are stronger than they look....you just have to apply a little more strength than he applies. Do it at night, when he's sleeping and try rubbing /massaging his palm. This should help loosen up his hand. If that doesn't work. Just stretch each finger out and clip.

I have a 4 month old son and what I do is I make a game out of it. I bite his nails though. You just have to make it fun.

Try it when the baby goes into deep sleep. Deep means when you lift his hand and let it free, it falls flat without waking him up. And be firm but gentle. Even if he doesn't open his fingers, try lifting one finger at a time. Remember, you will be doing more harm by not cutting them.
