From where did Hurricane Katrina originate? I know most hurricanes form off the coast of Africa, but was wondering where Katrina formed?

You're right -- most hurricanes form off the coast of Africa, and Hurricane Katrina was no exception. Many hurricanes dissipate on their way westward across the Atlantic Ocean and end up getting downgraded to tropical storms (or dissipate altogether), but Katrina just kept getting stronger and stronger until it made that nasty right turn and ended up in southern Louisiana.
