there are two types of firewalls a software firewall that is a part of the windows xp service pack 2 system and your hardware firewall that is used in most routers. if you do not have the a router then your problem is in the windows firewall go to control panel and then go to the windows firewall icon if you do not see the icon named that then you are in catogry view in windows xp and on the left hand side of the screen you need to click what says switch to classic view and then you will see the icon now once your in the firewall program you can disable it but that is not recommended it would e better to go to the exceptions tab and the click on add program and add the exe file to the program you are useing that is getting blocked by your filewall this will then tell the firewall to allow the program to have access outside thefirewall. now if you have a router then you will need to find out what adress you use to access the routers software and you will see a tab normaly for the firewall settings and then would do the same and tell it to allow access to the applied program or programs that you want.

A firewall is a hardware or software solution to enforce security policies. In the physical security analogy, a firewall is equivalent to a door lock on a perimeter door or on a door to a room inside of the building - it permits only authorized users such as those with a key or access card to enter. A firewall has built-in filters that can disallow unauthorized or potentially dangerous material from entering the system. It also logs attempted intrusions.
if you look bottom right hand corner of your screen, if you put your mouse pointer over these icons, 1 should say firewall, or security etc.

Program that keeps out undesirable intrusions from the internet. If you are using Windows x-p it is a part of service pack 2 and is found in control panel. If you do not have antivirus and antispam and a firewall you should get one.
