Celibacy was created for Catholic Clergy in the early middle ages. What would happen is that Catholic Clergy would receive land and property from their family, or congregation. When the priest died he would leave the land, and often the church and surrounding land to his children. The Vatican instilled a vow of celibacy so that the Vatican would gain land, money, and resources, instead of losing them. Because when the priest died with no heirs his land, money, and property would go to the church.

First, Judeo-Christian tradition has always held that single people be celibate. This is taught by Judaism and Christianity from before the Scriptures were written down.

The question should be: Why can't priests marry?

This idea of a celibate clergy came from the Jews, John the Baptist, Jesus, and the Apostle Paul.

The Jews. The Talmud argues that a person whose “soul is bound up with the Torah and is constantly occupied with it” may remain celibate (Maimonides, Laws of Marriage 15.3). For example, Yahweh ordered the prophet Jeremiah not to marry (Jeremiah 16:1-4). Moreover, the Essenes was a group that was active in Jesus’ time that practiced celibacy and thought by most scholars to be the authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

John the Baptist and Jesus are both believed to have been celibate for their entire lives. Some scholars believe that the example of the Essenes influenced either or both Jesus and John the Baptist in their celibacy.

The Apostle Paul is explicit about his celibacy (see 1 Cor. 7). There is also evidence in the gospel of Matthew for the practice of celibacy among at least some early Christians, in the famous passage about becoming “eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 19:12).

The concept took many twists and turns over the years and will probably take a few more before Christ returns in glory.

With love in Christ.

First of all, not all Roman Catholic priests are celibate. Some are married! Mandatory celibacy was officially imposed on all priests(Second Lateran Council). Any marriage entered into by a priest was regarded as invalid and anyone currently married had to separate from their spouses - leaving them to whatever fate God had in store for them, even if it meant leaving them destitute. Of course this was an immoral thing to do to those spouses, and many clergy realized that there was little religious or traditional basis for it, so they defied that order and continued in their marriages.
A further and very important factor in the push to require celibacy for clergy was the problematic relationship the Roman Catholic Church had with real estate and inherited land. Priests and bishops were not just religious leaders: they also had political power over the people. When they controlled land, which was at the time the basis for any political power, that land could either go to the church or to the man's heirs when he died.
Naturally the church wanted to keep it and retain political power itself; the best way to do that was to ensure that there weren't any rival claimants on the land, and keeping the clergy celibate and unmarried was the easiest way to accomplish this goal. Making celibacy a religious obligation was also the best way to make sure that the clergy obeyed.

It wasn't required in the early church--it didn't became tradition until the Renaissance. Pope Alexander was not only married, he was the father of 3 children, including Lucrecia Borgnia, the woman who was famous as a poisoner. Many priests and even popes were married up to that point.

To focus on the things of God. As Paul pointed out, getting married can divide your direction - and you might not be as constructive as you could be otherwise. Unfortunetly, Christians nowdays usually aren't the soapbox, fire & brimstone evangalists that they used to be... AND SHOULD BE. Does anyone doubt that this is satan's world? Check into the masons & mason symbols. MORE THAN 1/2 of the churches around detroit are run by masons. masonry has created the mormons, jehovas witnesses, christian science & scientology. The 32 degree mason 'joel goldsmith' has written 25 books for 'christian science', and between him and his 'father', have worked on soundtracks of over 550 movies (and not one was pro-Christian in any way, shape or form) - movies include star trek & stargate.
95% of masons are peons who dont have a clue - but others.. are like crowley (called 'the most wicked man on earth' - while he was alive)or pike (KKK), definitely do.
also of note: 'extremist bombers' being called 'fundamentalists' when they're part of a religion that usually disowns them - and those who support 'intelligent design' are being called 'religious extremists' when they might not even be agnostic.

Sometimes, letting go seems like the easiest thing to do. But think about this: you've invested so much of your time and energy into another person; you've made a solemn promise; and you still know there's love, even if it's hiding underneath the surface. Centuries ago, a Catholic priest mistranslated a key phrase with the word celebrate in it. He left out the "R."

Catholics beleive a lot of things that are not laid out in the bible for example the bible says if we ask for forgivness for our sins then we will be forgiven and there will be a place in heaven for us but Catholics add purgtury to this its like community service to earn forgivness

I think the theory is that if they are celibate they can concentrate on their mission to their people without distractions.

In practice, I dont think it works because they just get frustrated in denying themselves some natural pleasures (if they were married).
