I was in Vietnam as a kid in 1971-1972 (I was born here in America). I learned Vietnamese from my family and friends there, and was fluent. I didn't speak Tieng Viet regularly for years after I came back, and pretty much forgotten.

I recently went to Vietnam, found a great girl and marrying her in November. That in mind, I suddenly have to speak Vietnamese again. I'm using Pinsleur's course, which is very good to pick up basic vocabularly and getting the tones right again (Vietnamese is a tonal language). Talking with my fiancee' helps out a lot too. In just a few months, I'm able to get by and will become more fluent when I stay there for a couple months.

So I guess you can say that I learned Viet from California and Hanoi. I attended Pinsleur and the University of my Fiancee'. Pinsleur's course is about $200. My fiancee is free...

Some of the food can be spicy, but not all of it is. Native Viet food is about the same as you can get at most Viet restaurants in the States. Pho (Viet soup) is the Viet staple dish. There is a lot more variety of Pho, and you can't go anywhere in Vietnam without seeing a place that serves it.

If you're asking about Viet food, then you should ask about eating dogs. Yes, dog is served and eaten by Viet people, but not by all. Eating dog is common among most third world countries, and not just Vietnam.
