1. Space is a vacuum. So nothing is there as either a source or a reflector of light. Hence it is black to our eyes.

2. Even if we consider the stars (and the Sun, planets, etc.) to be bright enough, light travels in a straight line. Any light from a source or reflector can only travel from it directly to our eyes. So if you look at empty space, no light comes from that direction. We as humans interpret it as black.

3. Light gets weaker as it gets farter from the source (or reflector). So the farther light came from, the fainter it is. At large enough distances, our eyes will not be able to see anything from a very far object. so even if there may be sources in a black region of space, they are already so faint we cannot see anything, and still black prevails.

All of these do not mean that there is no light in the black regions. All we need is a powerful instrument to make the light from these areas visible.

The only reason we have a light source during our so called "daytime" is due to the excessively large glowing ball called sun. The universe does not have a gaseous ball large enough to illuminate the entirity of its being. We also have limited information as well. We have never been inside another galaxy to see if they have any type of gaseous balls of illumination nor have we traveled to "the ends of the universe" to completely prove prior statements made. Now ... if we could cancel out the dark ages, WWI, WWII, and now a reoccuring WWIII (Iraq, etc.), we would be much further ahead in this exploration. We would have already answered these questions, colonized other planets and our own ocean.

There is nothing to reflect the suns light. Also you have to think that we are just a little piece of space and the sun can not light it all up.

Easy answer would be: if an object doesn't have it's own light source, then the only way for the human eye to see it is if light is reflected off of it. Space is mostly empty, hence not much to reflect the light of.

Now, that is in the light spectrum that is visible to the human eye. If you look at space in the x-ray, gamma ray or radio wave spectrum, it's quite busy... :)

because the space is vaccum and light needs something to be reflected on .... and so as u r in earth the air molecules in the atmosphere reflects the light rays and so it is light when there is a source of light present but space is vacuum and so contains no air molecules to reflect light and so space is dark.

the earth atmosphere has gases that cause the sky look blue when the sun light travel through, in outer space their is no gases that the sun light passes throu in large amounts.
In reality it is the atmosphere contents that makes the sky blue. Space has none.

Good question.
"Light is invisible but it makes objects visible when it strikes on it"
First of all the entire universe is mainly filled with black matter so when light falls on it black color is reflected and thus u see that the universe appears to be dark in spite of the presence of sunlight.

there is nothing in space to reflect light back at you- your eyes can only see souces of, or reflected light.
Actually if you see a red chair, the chair is really every color except red, as all other colors were absorbed by the chair and red was only color reflected back to you and not absorbed by the chair-This is just a fun fact- dont think too much on it

the space is black because there is only vacuum, no other materials to reflect the light for us to see. thats why some planets are bright, because they reflect light from the sun
