In many ways I DO miss vinyl... there is little that is reproduced using this format these days.
I recall - as a DJ contemplating the move away from valve amplifiers too!!
It's not that i am that old, but that the valve amps - although a much older technology and infinitely more fragile than transistors - had more ooomph (hard to quantify I know, unless you have soooul). The sound was brighter and the overall sound was much richer. This was whilst still playing vinyl.
Now DJs turn up at a gig with little more than a couple of IPods and a digital mixer amp and some speakers.
So even CDs are being superseded.
But these new ..mp3s or .aac files have deliberately cut down on - or just done away with - many of the subtle harmonics that the coders have decided the human ear cannot detect. But with all of these people noticing a difference...... maybe there is something about the range of human hearing that we don't yet fully gasp......

I don't miss it (vinyl), because I still have plenty of it, and my collection is still increasing. But the vinyl days were it seems better.
I know a person who had a complete Elvis collection on vinyl and did away with it to swap it for CD's and regretted it after a week because the sound was worse!
Long live VINYL !! Put the needle on the record....

The sound quality is different, if the original recording was well made. Like listening to the radio on a valve set...
No, I don't miss them, they were too fragile. There are new digital systems being developed to mimic the harmonics a previous poster mentioned; I think eventually they'll be good enough to fool most of us.
I loathe MP3's and wouldn't bother with them if you paid me, its cd quality or nothing!

Hubby and I have a massice vinyl collection (well, most of them are his) and I love the crackle and hiss when you put an LP on. I suppose it's nostalgia as I grew up before CDs were widely available, but they are so evocative and extremely tactile. Remember how exciting it was to buy a 12" and bring it home on the bus, clutching it to your knees! While CDs are good quality, they are soulless and clinical.
